New Dog Vaccinations

Dr. Liz

What shots and various things should a puppy get before you can take it home.

The amount and type of vaccinations your dog requires depends on the age of your dog. To protect your new puppy it must be vaccinated, beginning the process between six and eight weeks, and repeating every three to four weeks after. This process will go on until the puppy is between sixteen and twenty weeks old.

I always advised that when you are choosing a new pet, you request the medical history. Regardless of whether you are getting your puppy from a breeder or adopting. The seller must be able to provide this. This information is imperative, it will allow your chosen vet to continue the treatment at the appropriate time.  You will often find that people advertising puppies will let you know if the dog has undergone or completed any of its vaccination schedule.

 First vist to the vet.

  • Your vet will ask you some routine questions, don't be alarmed, your vet is simply filling in the background details. Be sure to take any paper work you have regarding the dog. You never know what will come in handy.
  • Your puppy will get a physical exam. During this your vet is checking to make sure that your dog is happy and healthy in all areas.
  • ears, eyes and teeth are checked for abnormalities
  • Skin is checked for tick, fleas, and any dry areas that can alert

Establishing a relationship with a local vet is very important. Your local vet will keep a medical history for your pet, and will be a great source of advice and information. For this reason it is smart to find a vet that is close and convenient to you.
