The French Bulldog
Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at 5:00AM Dr. Liz,
I am thinking of getting a French Bulldog for my boyfriend and I, we have never had a dog before. We live in an apartment, but it is fine to have pets. Can you tell me a little bit about what they are like. There is one that is always at our local coffee shop, my boyfriend loves him. He seems like a great dog. What are your thoughts?

Sandra, thanks for bring this up, late last year I started to give information about pet breeds and types. I am so often asked to explain breed characteristics for people who are choosing new pets. I aim to update this list each week so new pet owners will have a data base of breed information to refer to.
The French Bulldog
Frenchie is their affectionate nickname, they make great companions. They are stocky little dogs who are playful, affectionate and pleasant to be around.
The French Bulldog was developed as the toy version of the English bulldog. As a breed it is a compact and powerful dog. It is a very muscular and intelligent dog, its most distinctive feature is it's bat like ears and irresistible expressive gaze.

Things to know about the French Bulldog
- Temperament- Loving companions, they demand attention. Frenchies are not good at sharing affection. They like to be the centre of attention, and therefore are not great with the introduction of children or other pets.
- Socialization- Frechies get on well with strangers and other peoples pets. They are very strong willed and need leadership. It is important that if you get a French Bulldog you have the temperament to be firm, calm and patient. The assertion of power is important, if this is not established your Frenchie could become snappish, stubborn and unruly.
- Exercise- Although this dog is little it needs lots of regular exercise. They have high energy levels and could, if you let them, play all day. It is important that they have varied stimulating experiences.
- Grooming- Easy to take care of, the short hair requires regular brushing. This breed is an average shedder. The ears are something that need to be cleaned regularly.
- Home conditions- Frencies are active indoor dogs, for this reason they are perfect for apartment living. They do not do well in extreme temperatures.
These little dogs make great pets, their flat little nose causes them to sound like a piglet when they get excited, but this is all part of their charm and appeal. They make loving and life long companions, nuzzling their way into your heart.
